Alvar Aalto Table, World record for Alvar Aalto
At Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsinkis Modern Art & Design auction a table by Alvar Aalto was sold this Sunday for the world record price of SEK 1,185 000 (EUR 115,000) + fees.
After intense bidding with a large number of international bidders we could state that a new world record had been reached. It is also the first time ever a table deigned by Alvar Aalto has been sold for over SEK 1 million.
The table was originally ordered by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, but as both the manufacturer Viljo Hirvonen and Alvar Aalto passed away before the table had been delivered, it remained in Finland and has remained privately owned until now.
Dan von Koskull, CEO at Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsinki and specialist in Finnish design & crafts is excited about the sale.
“I have been waiting a long time for this fantastic table and I am happy and proud that the owner chose to sell through us. I am especially happy that the table stays in Finland.”
Andreas Siesing, expert at Auctionet.com where the table was sold is also very pleased and is hoping to see more treasures in the future:
“After this autumns world record with the IKEA armchair “Cavelli”, it feels great to be a part of another design record”, says Andreas Siesing. “It will be exciting to see if this record sale can attract other Alvar Aalto rarities”, Andreas concludes.
